General Chemistry 2 (CHEM 060)


High School Diploma or equivalent, and General Chemistry 1 or equivalent.

Course Description

This course adds to and further develops the concepts introduced in General Chemistry 1. The study of reaction rates and equilibrium is introduced, and redox chemistry is continued and furthered to include electrochemistry, particularly as it applies to biological systems. Equilibrium is again explored through acid-base and complex ion chemistry, where topics including buffers, pH and pKa are studied. Extending thermochemistry, the laws of thermodynamics are reviewed with topics centered on enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy, and spontaneity. Nuclear chemistry in the evolution of matter is studied along with the chemistry of transition metals and coordination compounds.

This course is offered for either 4 credits or 5 credits. Please contact the school(s) to which you are planning to transfer your credits to confirm how many will be required for your program. You must notify ISP of the number of credits you will be earning before your class begins so we can plan your coursework accordingly. Note that this course includes 1 unit of laboratory work.
